Home Learning
Parents are a child’s first and best teacher, and we recommend that parents spend 10-20 minutes each day reading to their child in English and/or their home language. Emerging literacy skills can be modeled and shared in any language, and any time spent enjoying books at home will benefit skill development in the classroom. Kindergarten students that become more independent readers may bring early level books home for additional practice.
Occasionally, Kindergarten teachers may send homework that is connected to the units of study, and there will be at least a few days or a week allowed to complete. These assignments could include surveys, observation logs, or other activities that are meant to be shared. Families can also support young learners by helping them to become more independent and responsible for chores and activities at home. The most important aspect of home and school learning for young children is that they can feel successful and positive about their growing abilities.
